Party season in Marbella started off with a bang on Saturday, with a gold and cream themed 40th birthday party. The brilliant venue was Restaurante La Mangaleta in Bahia Marbella and is perfect for an al fresco party, under the trees and by the sea. There was live music by the singer from La Sala and a great atmosphere, helped by the gorgeous day.

A great idea for a party game, download these celebrity faces from the internet and put on skewers. A certain ice-breaker at a table!

I think my favourite party theme would have to be 'Vintage'. Obviously it can be interpreted in many ways but I love pretty, pastel and girly. I just came across this gorgeous photo shoot set up by a talented event planner called Melissa Elise Event Design + Styling. It is just divine, reminiscent of a Laduree salon in Paris. It would be perfect for a baby shower or a bridal shower or even a wedding.

I love the idea of a tea bar! What a brilliant and original idea! Will have to use that one!

Happy New Year to all! I really hope you had a joyful festive period filled with lots of entertaining and Fiestas!! I hope this year brings health and happiness... Many are still facing tough times, natural disasters as well as economic ones (my sister has only just got back home to Melbourne after being in Queensland on holiday with her husband and kids when the floods came, a month ago! They were marooned!) However I believe it is important to put on a happy face (they say it immediately makes you feel better anyway!) and find a reason to celebrate.

I love trawling the internet to find stylish, unique, creative, exciting people, places and things to inspire me in my party business and in my life. I am going to share my favourite bits each week...

I made a chocolate cake last weekend for a bbq we had at home and it was very very good. I will post the recipe later... It is one of my hero Donna Hay's recipes called Chocolate Buttermilk Cake. I have since made it again and keep it in the refrigerator so that i can sneak pieces when I feel the need (quite often) It is not like a sponge cake, much denser and more moist, but just made using cocoa powder. The trick was I didn't have any buttermilk so used plain milk with a spoonful of fresh lemonjuice in it.

I am working on a baby shower for two of my best friends here in Spain. Yay! They are both having girls around the same time. So many ideas!!! You know how much I love ice-cream sundae bars, well I have found the cutest ice-cream sundae bar baby shower inspiration, from a fellow Australian.... an amazingly creative and inspirational girl named Jordan who has a company called Polkadot Prints. I love to keep up to date with the trends in baking around the world. Cupcakes have been the favourites for such a long time now and their popularity doesn't seem to be diminishing. Even with the rise of 'cake balls'! The fashion designer Patrick Cox, famous for his loafers, has just opened his own cupcake shop with a difference! It's called Cox, Cookes and Cake and is in Brewer Street in London. The grand opening was yesterday I believe.

Cox has joined forces with the fashionable French patissier Eric Lanlard (Cake Boy) to give the girly cupcake a much-needed makeover. Some of the new looks include classic Dali-esque red lips, Andy Warhol inspired images, skull and crossbones and one to look out for, the beef cake which is decorate with a bulging bicep! And the shop is not so traditional either. For one, it's next door to a sex shop.... refreshments anyone! It has black marble floors highlighted with neon pink and sequins on the walls. Staff are wearing black studded leather aprons and they will deliver locally on rollerskates! So next time you are in London, don't be shy!

We had a stand at the Laude International School Fair and it was such fun! We sponsored a bouncy castle so were situated on the oval where all the kids congregated. I put out a small table and chairs for kids to do some art and crafts and it was such a hit! The chairs were constantly filled. OUr free mini cupcakes were especially popular as you can imagine!

Kids Art & Craft Workshop

The Fiesta Fiesta Kids Art and Craft Workshop started last week in Atalaya Park at the bar Little Vegas, from 5.15pm - 7pm every Tuesday. Last Tuesday we made Santa puppets out of wooden spoons.

Last night we made Christmas Tree ornaments.... some from salt dough, others from felt, and angels for the top of the tree, made from paper plates. It was a huge success. If anyone is interested in coming along, give Nicola a call on 636673936.

Here's our grubby little munchkins enjoying a toasted sandwich during the workshop. We also sing songs and dance around, in English and Spanish, which the girls love. It's a nice way for us all to meet new people, improve our Spanish, (or English), and for the kids to have something to take home that they can be proud of (regardless of what it actually looks like!) My daughter's santa puppets below..... one has one leg and the other looks like it has been in to battle. But she loves them!

Halloween!

Wow what a busy time Halloween is. I had forgotten. I know it is a big deal in the U.S. (my ex-boyfriend was from Louisiana) but it seems to be bigger and bigger each year I have been living here in Spain. It is not big at all in Australia. Mainly commercia l. As it is also my birthday I always have a pretty big time of it one way or another. This year I enjoyed breakfast in bed (with my daughter) served by my husband. Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, pastries, berries, pink grapefruit, orange juice, coffee and champagne. Can't complain about that can I! Then it was chaos as I was getting ready for a kids halloween party that I was hosting in Sierra Blanca, getting Willow ready to go to the kids party she had been invited too in Los Arqueros (my husband was taking her to this), finalising the babysitter for later that night.... After my party which was good fun (12 kids aged between 3 and 9), I raced home to change into my Mortisha outfit and make up my husband as Dracula. Fortunately everything had gone to plan and the babysitter was there so we were able to get out the door pretty quickly. Willow had passed out thankyou ...

The Halloween dinner party was held at Evita by Buenos Aires in Nueva Andalucia and the food and service were incredible. We had an absolute ball and all went on to Studio 10 for more fun. Got home at 5am. The following day was hell but it was all worth it!

The following Saturday I had a gorgeous little girls party to host. The birthday girl was turning 9 and wanted a really girly party of games followed by dressing up for formal dinner party, makeup, nails, hair..... lots of glitter.... They were all served Babycham by a French black tie waiter (her daddy) before sitting down to dinner. It was so cute.

While we are squeezing out the last remaining drops of summer I am feeling guilty about my lack of blogging. My parents in Oz are asking for photos for their 'brag book' and friends are asking where I am. I have actually been quite busy, and a little lazy, choosing sleep over blogging! We are all sick at the moment.... sore throats coughs and aching bodies.... boring!! I want to be making the most of the last gorgeous days of summer but can barely get off the couch.

Anyway, it's Thurday so I'm going to talk fashion. My girlfriend and I are meeting at Small World on Monday for a coffee then off to Banus to check out the winter fashions. I already had a sneaky look at Zara and like what I see. Lots of black, animal prints, tight, rock chick, thigh high boots.... as I'm small I go for tight, short jackets, high boots. You will always find animal print in my wardrobe so I'm glad it's IN for another year. In fact I have a leopard print Versace jacket from 10 years ago that will be fab for this winter. And a boxy YSL jacket from the 80's that i picked up for 40€ from a vintage store in Marbella old town last year will perfect. So there is my winter wardrobe on the way...

Friday - Travel

Having just returned from a holiday in Portugal, I thought I'd put up some of our holiday snaps...

We had 3 days in Lisbon, 3 days in Sintra and 3 days in the Algarve near Vilamoura. Although it was challenging at times (2 year old temper tantrums to blame), we had a great time and can now cross it off our list of places to go.

I live in a development of apartments and pay a lot of money in community fees every year so am pleased to see that our gardens are always looking great. My personal garden/terrace, unfortunately was not looking so hot after 1o days away in Portugal. I lost a chilli plant but everything else just needed some love. Today I'm looking at outdoor spaces. I have a dilemma in that I live modern style, I also love shabby chic and I adore Asian inspired design. What is a girl to do?

Ok, according to my new schedule, today is Fashion Day. Yesterday I made Willow a dress. No I can't sew, or rather haven't tried to since Needlework Classes at school where I made a full skirt.... YUK! I bought a singlet for 95c from Hipercor and some dye and released my inner hippy with some tie- dye. Was lots of fun. Am going to do one for myself when we get back from Portugal. She loved it!....

Willow's 2nd Birthday Party

Well the party was perfect really. I ran out of time to put up all the decoration that I had planned, partly because everything I put up, Willow proceeded to pull down again so I had a battle to get anything up! The weather was perfect, everyone looked gorgeous and the food and drinks went down well. I made blinis with smoked salmon, creme fraiche and chives, chickpea and aubergine fritters with cumin yoghurt dip, little chicken mayo sandwiches, little maple syrup cookies shaped like stars, flowers etc. and iced in pastel colours, and of course the delicious cupcakes from Cake Marbella (http://www.cakemarbella.com/) were devoured! I made a coconut cake iced in pastel flowers for the birthday cake and instead of take home bags there was a flower pot (in a baked bean can) with their name on it. Oh and Bellinis with fresh peach puree for the adults!!

Now it's sorted until I get back from week trip to UK to attend family combined birthday party 30/50 and 60, when i will have to get on to the decorations!!

We have just visited two of the most inspirational cities in the world in my opinion. We have had family visiting from Florida for a week so thought we would really show them a good time.

First we took them to Granada, just over an hour away from where we live in Marbella. This city reached the height of it's glory in the 13C when Muslims from Cordoba sought refuge there after being ousted by the Christians in 1236. For the next 2 1/2 centuries the kingdom flourished, becoming a symbol of economic, cultural and artistic prosperity, with the Alhambra at its heart. Enough of the history lesson.... here are some bits from our trip...

There is still a strong Moroccan presence in Granada with wonderful streets filled with tea and spice sellers, tea shops where you can sample the exotic tea blends and sweet pastries. The previous 3 photos were taken by my sister in law who is an incredible photographer. I have the same camera as her but am still learning!

A visit to the Alhambra Palace is the highlight of a trip to Granada in my opinion. It really is spectacular, especially the gardens, if you love flowers like i do!

My sister in law loves flowers as much as i do!

The final experience you must have in Granada is a hammam, the arabic baths. Delicious!

La Cabane Opening party - Los Monteros

Nicola and I went to the La Cabane opening on Friday night. The setting was beautiful but the party was disappointing. (Not least because it was interupted by demonstrators who had been fired by the hotel and not paid apparently). The canapes were average, not 5 star... the singer was average although behaved in a divaesque manner and kept everyone waiting after she was introduced... and there was little atmosphere. They should have asked us to manage the event!

Ahoy Mateys!

Last Friday we hosted a Pirate Party for 25 x 6 year olds (plus parents and siblings!). Unsurprisingly it was exhausting but it went very well. The birthday boy had a great time which is very important to us! It was non-stop entertainment with Treasure Hunt, obstacle course, chocolate game, pass the parcel and more...

Pirate Party
